– This morning, Saai – the Southern African Agri Initiative – proudly launched the next chapter of its Young Farmer Initiative at the Syngenta Landbou Boerekos Farm Kitchen, under the theme: “The Agricultural Environment We Want.”
The launch was made possible through the generous support of Hollard and Syngenta, in collaboration with Landbouweekblad. Students from the Universities of Pretoria, the Free State, and Stellenbosch gathered to mark this significant step in shaping the future of agriculture in Southern Africa.
The Young Farmer Initiative, driven by Saai’s commitment to family farmers, has already established a solid foundation at university level through Tuks Landbou and similar student platforms. These structures have connected young people to opportunities in agriculture – from study tours and international debates on trade and sustainability, to internships, scholarships, and participation in global young farmer networks.
“We are building more than just farmers,” said Dr Theo de Jager, Executive Chair of Saai.
“We are cultivating a generation of leaders, innovators, and custodians of our food systems. And today we say to them: this sector is yours to shape.”
The new phase of the initiative moves beyond exposure and support, and instead focuses on influence, impact, and long-term vision. It seeks to answer a critical question:
What kind of agricultural environment do we want to see by 2050?
Saai believes the path to a sustainable and inclusive future rests on four pillars:
“We must ensure that rural life – with its strong communities, schools, churches and business centres – remains a viable and attractive option,” said De Jager.
The launch event brought together students and key partners – including Hollard, Syngenta, and Landbouweekblad – to begin forming a long-term think tank. This influential group will align policy, research, and resources to ensure that today’s young farmers not only survive, but thrive.
Hollard, a committed partner in sustainable agriculture, commented:
“This initiative aligns fully with our values. Agriculture must remain a career path where young South Africans from all backgrounds can build a future.”
Dr Theo de Jager concluded:
“The outcome of the day is far more than a network of agricultural students or an idea.
It is a practical action plan for what we must do now to ensure we create the future that agriculture needs.”
Today’s launch is not the end of a journey – it is the beginning.
A beginning of influence, leadership, and action.
A beginning of realising “The Agricultural Environment We Want” – not just in words, but in practice.
